The energy price cap will increase by more than 80 per cent to £3,549 from 1 October, regulator Ofgem has announced.

Responding to the increase in energy bills, Andrew Pakes, Labour & Co-operative Parliamentary Candidate for Peterborough commented:

“Rising energy bills are already one of the biggest issues that people raise with me when I am out campaigning or attending events.

“Energy prices will rise by 80 per cent in October. This is incredibly worrying and will take many families to breaking point.

“The new price hike comes in the week that Peterborough Foodbank warned that we are coming to a crisis point where demand for support increases but fewer people are able to donate due to rising costs.”

Cllr Shaz Nawaz, Leader of the Labour Group on Peterborough City Council, added:

“Many services in the city offering support to struggling households are already stretched. This will only get worse over the coming months.

“We cannot wait any longer to act. This is a national emergency. The Conservatives need to stop dithering and freeze energy bills now so households don’t pay a penny more in winter.”
