Labour’s Shadow Minister Seema Malhotra MP, and Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Peterborough, Andrew Pakes, this week hosted a roundtable with the Federation of Small Business (FSB) to hear from local businesses on the challenges they’re facing, and to share the next Labour government’s plans for supporting business growth.

The event on 22nd February saw business owners from across Peterborough raise their concerns about what is needed from the Government to support small businesses to be more successful.

The event was hosted by James O’Rawe, FSB Lead Member for Cambridgeshire and general manager at Peterborough Workspace. Over the years Peterborough Workspace has acted as a springboard for smaller businesses both when starting out and growing, providing guidance and vital work space in the city.

The roundtable discussion covered a range of issues, including business concerns about the rising cost of doing business, tackling late payments to small businesses and the need for a new skills strategy to help fill vacancies. Those attending also welcomed Labour’s commitment to business rates reform and for a fairer business taxation that ensures a better level playing field between online businesses and bricks and mortar businesses in our communities.

Commenting on the roundtable, Seema Malhotra MP said: “Small businesses like those here in Peterborough have faced tough times with rising business rates, a crashed economy, soaring energy prices and supply chain issues.

“Labour has recognised the support that small businesses need, which is why we have pledged to cut and eventually entirely scrap business rates, clamp down on late payments to small firms, and turn the Tories’ failed apprenticeships levy into a ‘Growth and Skills Levy’.”

Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Peterborough, Andrew Pakes, added: “There is no economic recovery in Peterborough without support for small businesses that drive prosperity.

“I’ve heard from small businesses and traders across the city worried about the cliff edge on costs from rising energy bills and business rates. Thanks to the Federation of Small Business for bringing together today’s roundtable. We need a new start for small businesses and Peterborough.”
